Bush signs unconstitutional "power grab" presidential directives NSPD51 and HSPD20, giving him full-dictatorial powers in the event of a loosely defined "catastrophic emergency." _______________________________ The directives define "catastrophic emergency" as "any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government function." It also states, "The President shall lead the activities of the Federal Government for ensuring constitutional government." In other words, the president gave himself the sole power and duty to interpret the constitution anyway he chooses, and neither Congress nor the public shall be allowed to debate or disagree on such matters. Right now, the only thing standing between the United States' Constitutional Republic and Bush/Cheney's apparent desire to rule with an iron fist is a lesser event than that of 9/11. _______________________________

    You all missed a great show on Frontline tonight- "Cheney's Law", about the rhetoric after 9/11 and the lead up to the full-brunt American invasion of Afghanistan, Iraq, and the issue of (illegal/warrantless) domestic wiretapping. In short the Bush Administration has violated the Constitution and defied Congress numerous times. Sourced by two words- "Signing Statements". This makes me very angry. Especially with the stunt Gonzo tried to pull on Ashcroft in the emergency room ward.

    The point here is that this gives the president the ability to control all levels of goverment. This means that they could suspend elections, thus keeping themselves in office until there is no more 'threat'.

    It's funny that the US Government Republican/Democrat alike have backed wrongful coups. Toppled legitimate democracies in Latin America for example and people think that this administration wouldn't try a similar power grab in the US? PHILLYPHILLY2007 has a point but it's a disappointing one although I understand his sentiment. Distract the country with Obama's win and then it's Night of the Long Knives. Man it's going to be fucking interesting.

    no matter who is president, they will have these powers. who's to say the present economic crisis won't be the perfect excuse for a socialist dictatorship under obama or mccain. especially since both candidates seem to have wider support between the two parties. and if obama wins, he will have a democrat congress and liberal supreme court with whom to cooperate. bush has set dangerous precedents in executive power, and future presidents will be grateful. [vote chuck baldwin or bob barr in 2008]

    The world is not quite as it has been presented to you through mass media. Your laughter is the denial you have to all that which may threaten your safe little world. This may sound harsh and mean, but I am simply saying it to make you aware of why you laugh. Instead of doing that, perhaps start looking around at these things with a more open eyes. The media would love to have you keep them closed and, yes, you can keep pretending the world is safe, but eventually, the illusion will crumble.
